Spacecraft payloads

Non-exhaustive list of items sent to deep space aboard national space agencies probes and landers. They are mainly scientific instruments and experiments, nuclear power plants and nuclear heaters, commemorative items, etc. Some of them were brought back to Earth by Apollo astronauts and others aboard sample return capsules.

Payloads hauled by private space missions are listed on the Commercial Payloads table.

Over 2,260 items have been identified.

Most notable payloads in deep space:

  • Over 1,230 nuclear fuel pellets
  • 2 funeral capsules
  • Most notable payloads returned to Earth:

  • 5 Surveyor III moon lander parts retrieved by the Apollo 12 astronauts: the TV camera, the soil sampling scoop, two aluminum tube sections and a TV cable segment
